Dog Story: Booker’s Easter Miracle

We loved this dog story from Lynne T. because it had a happy ending, and it reminded us of the importance of knowing Pet First Aid. In fact, Lynne’s story inspired us at Doggie Detail to look into dog first aid and safety resources to share with you on our blog over the next month or two. Congratulations to Lynne who has won a free month of service from Doggie Detail! Find out how you can win a month of free service from Doggie Detail by submitting your dog story.

Booker’s Easter Miracle:

On Easter Sunday in 2009, I was slicing up the remainder of the Easter Ham, when a fairly large chunk fell to the floor. Our 14 year old cocker spaniel, Booker, seized the opportunity and gobbled it down before our other cocker, Rocky could grab it.

Booker immediately started choking on the peace of ham. I ran to him and he took off in a panic. He ran downstairs in our house with me after him. I was trying to figure out how to perform the Heimlich Manoeuvre and was in a state of panic myself.

I ran back upstairs yelling for help from my daughter. By the time we got back downstairs, Booker was unconscious and not breathing. My daughter, Kim, bent down to him screaming “Booker don’t die!!” She reached into his mouth and down his throat and pulled out the ham. Booker started to regain consciousness, started wagging his tail. In a matter of moments he stood up and gazed around at the family who were all fussing over him. He then started looking around for the piece of ham that had been stolen from him. We all laughed and someone said, “Well, it is Easter Sunday and Booker has just arisen from the dead!”

Booker lived for another year passing away just before his 16th birthday, in February 2010. We still miss him and always will.
